The Crazy Chaos of Kinshasa

In his letters, Dr. Jerry Galloway ("Courage in the Congo") would describe the sights, sounds, and smells each time he arrived in Kinshasa. We recently passed through Kinshasa on our way to and from Tshikaji in the Kasai region. The congestion, thousands of motorcycle taxis, and smoke-filled air combined to jolt the senses.

Kinshasa is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kinshasa is now one of the world's fastest-growing cities. With an estimated 16 million residents, it's the most densely populated city in the DRC. Kinshasa is a city of sharp contrasts, with affluent residential and commercial areas and three universities alongside sprawling slums.

Kinshasa is the principal river port of the Congo. The Congo River is the second longest river in Africa after the Nile. Kinshasa is located along the south bank of the Congo River and directly opposite the city of Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo. The city and province have 3,000 miles of roadways, and only 10% have pavement.
