Kinshasa Falls to the Rebels

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

Excerpt from the draft of “Apostle to the Pygmies – The Doctor Jerry Galloway Story”

I made sure to have my radio on most of the day. Mobutu and the rebel leader, Kabila, were meeting on a South African ship off the Atlantic coast of Angola. According to the radio, Mobutu agreed to resign. They made plans for the transition of power. I prayed it would happen peacefully, and Kinshasa would not see any fighting. If there were a peaceful transition, then transportation in and out of Kinshasa would resume, and I could receive my medicines.

As of May 18, we have a new "president." Kinshasa fell into the rebel army's command. The country also has a new name, and it is now called the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The people are no longer Zairians but are Congolese. I thank God that Kinshasa did not experience a blood bath. I pray the new government will bring justice and peace to this beautiful country.

The past week included tension and fear for the people, the Sisters, and the missionaries. Group after group of armed Zairian soldiers and miserable Rwandese refugees arrived every day as they fled Kabila's advancing army.
