I received the bad news two more interns in the hospital had meningitis. I went over there as fast as I could. Little Bruno was one of them. Since he remained conscious and had received treatments for the second day, I held out hope for him. The other one, a little sixth-grade girl and the smartest one in her class, had fallen into a deep coma.
The girl became ill on December 26 and went into a coma two days later. They brought her to the hospital on the 30th. The girl had been unconscious for two days without antibiotics, so I did not have much hope for her. The mother did not bring her sooner because she believed evil spirits caused the illness. So, she used fetishes to try to cure the girl. The girl died at midnight. We took her to the girl's home. There were 18 students there, and I gave them soap and African-print cloth. They made a casket for her.
